Mission of ISKCON

The mission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is guided by the Seven Purposes established by its Founder-Āchārya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. These foundational principles shape the spiritual vision, educational outreach, cultural initiatives, and community responsibilities of ISKCON centers worldwide, including ISKCON Durham.

At its core, ISKCON seeks to promote spiritual knowledge and contribute to the moral and cultural upliftment of society by reawakening awareness of humanity’s relationship with Lord Sri Krishna. Through structured education in bhakti-yoga, ISKCON presents teachings from the Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita in a manner that is accessible, practical, and relevant to contemporary life.

A primary objective of ISKCON is to share Krishna consciousness globally, helping individuals understand their spiritual identity beyond temporary social and material designations. By promoting values such as compassion, integrity, self-discipline, and service, ISKCON supports both personal transformation and responsible community participation.

ISKCON also aims to cultivate spiritual fellowship and inclusive community life. Through temples, congregational programs, cultural festivals, youth initiatives, and educational seminars, individuals and families are provided opportunities for spiritual growth, cultural learning, and meaningful social connection within a respectful and welcoming environment.

The promotion of sankirtan, or congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, remains central to ISKCON’s mission. This devotional practice supports mindfulness, inner well-being, and collective unity. ISKCON encourages participation through temple kirtans, public cultural events, and community-based gatherings open to diverse audiences.

Another important dimension of the mission is the establishment and maintenance of temples as centers of worship, learning, and service. These spaces function not only as spiritual sanctuaries but also as community hubs where education, volunteer engagement, cultural preservation, and outreach initiatives take place.

ISKCON promotes principles of simple and conscious living, emphasizing nonviolence, honesty, gratitude, and respect for all living beings. Through educational programs, farm communities, vegetarian advocacy, and lifestyle guidance, ISKCON demonstrates how spiritual values can be applied responsibly in everyday life.

The publishing, distribution, and study of spiritual literature is also a cornerstone of ISKCON’s mission. Srila Prabhupada’s books provide philosophical insight, ethical guidance, and cultural knowledge, supporting lifelong learning and spiritual exploration for individuals worldwide.

At ISKCON Durham, these guiding purposes inform all spiritual programs, community outreach efforts, festivals, educational classes, and devotional services. By aligning with the global mission of ISKCON, the center strives to serve the local community while contributing to broader goals of peace, cultural education, spiritual awareness, and compassionate service for the benefit of society.
